Luffy has scared his crew: Arlong Park; when Crocodile & co said he was dead (although there was some resistance to believing that); Ennies Lobby when Lucci was beating him; Thriller Bark!!!
I just think those moments are fewer than what Ace and Shanks may have had to deal with (stabbing himself in the face!)
-mostly, as you said, since he almost never needs to be protected/saved
It's extremely amusing to picture them all getting drunk telling stories about their Insane Captain.
Oh...*shifty eyes* I...may have already written that ^^; as part of another fic - it is in beta right now
