Aww, this was such a good story. It's true that Ace would be completely devastated if old Whitebeard were to die, and die saving him, even! And Luffy knows just what to do to help his brother, whether it be just sitting next to him in silence, or catapulting him onto some island and dealing with him in his own way, brother to brother.
