I was browsing a Japanese fangirl blog, where she had written a lot of thought-out reasons why Ace shouldn't be really dead, and this one struck me, because I hadn't considered it before...
The title of chapter 574 is "The death of Portgas D Ace". What is the last thing we hear in that chapter? It's the flashback to Rouge, saying "His name is Gol D Ace."
...looking at it that way, it almost seems like the death of Portgas D Ace isn't necessarily the death of Gol D Ace, because Portgas isn't his real name! (I'm not sure if I'm picturing something like naye's fic or something completely different, but. Food for thought! :D)
