Chapter 562. Oda. What.
Well.
Fuck!
Did not see that coming.
Except... I worried for that Squard might have disappeared for suspicious reasons. But then I dismissed my paranoia and reminded myself that Whitebeard trusted Squard enough to put him in charge of the pirate allies. Except he couldn't. Because Squard went missing.
For suspicious reasons.
I any case. I never saw the sword coming.
And neither did Whitebeard.

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck.
This is so very very not good.
Ahahaha. Understatement. @_@
Ooooookay. Um. Oda! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!!??!
Why?!
And oh please Oda for the love of our sanity answer that next week. Or so help me I will sic Tanaka Mayumi and a basket of squashed kittens on you.

So... thoughts? On the heel face turn Whitebeard was so very obviously not expecting a;sdkfjhads;gkjah;fsgaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Squard:
made a deal with Sengoku
is mind controlled
is just generally evil and wants to take Whitebeard's head as much as most everyone at Marinford presently.
disagreed with Whitebeard's decision to storm Marinford on behalf of one man and wants to "save" the rest of the Whitebeard pirates by having everyone get the hell out of there.
is being controlled by Doflamingo
-unlikely as we've seen him otherwise occupied - at lest when Squard first disappeared
is dead and his body is being possessed by one of Moria's shadows: he's a zombie
-also less likely as Moria was busy first with Jinbei and then with... whoever he was fighting in this chapter
made a deal with another of Whitebeard's enemies: Teach, or Kaidou (okay, that last one is a huge stretch but we know he tried to attack Whitebeard on his way to Marinford so... not a friend certainly)
At the moment... my money is on "he wants to save Whitebeard's crew". If only because of the little speech he gave right before running Whitebeard through with his BFS - the whole "for the sake of the Whitebeard pirates we would gladly lay down our lives"
But he said "we". As in, more than just him. So. who else is in on this!?!?!??!?!?!!
Pirate ally mutiny would be so very not good right now!
And what debt do they all owe Whitebeard? (putting aside the question of who the hell "they" are!!!)
And and and... ASDKFJHASKDGJAH;DSKAF ODA WHAT!!?!?!
Do I share my random moment of morbidness, or don't I? ...skip if you can't handle my random morbidness: Squard's big fucking sword probably perfectly bisected Whitebeard's symbol on the back of his coat... that's kind of, um, creepy... above and beyond the whole stabbity stab thing. Okay, random morbidness over. o__o
Before the whole Marinford stuff even started I was thinking "ominous foreshadowing is ominous, Whitebeard is doomed". And then he showed up at Marinford. And was awesome. And I thought "no one that awesome can die! Nobody dies in One Piece, nobody dies in One Piece nobody dies in One Piece nobodydiesinOnePiece."
...
Until Oda proves otherwise, I'm going to believe Whitebeard won't leave Marineford alive. That way, if I'm wrong when when when, oh please ODa I can be joyously surprised. Rather than... the other way around.
:( oh Ace. And Marco. And everyone! This is going to suck so hard.
Silver lining: he's not taking a break next week? And Buggy. There was Buggy - and rescuing of the video feed AAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAA. Not quite how I pictured it but... I totally called that!
EDIT: IVNAKOV! IVANKOV CAN HEAL WHITEBEARD! ...oh I am so bad at this emotional distance thing. Whitebeard don't die Ace will be sad! And... even more broken. ow ;_;
More excellent chapter musings (and squee and freak outs) here and here and here. Is it next Thursday yet?

The REACTION SHOTS oh god I am slain, slain! I think I am going to go with your coping strategy and hope to be hit with surprise!joy, but I keep thinking about all the foreshadowing about this being "the end of an era" and wanting to curl up into a ball of denial.
AAAAAAAAAACCEEEEEEE. Babyyyyy~! TT_TT
Urgh, I'm tentatively gonna go with Squardo making a deal somehow or otherwise thinking this will ultimately benefit the WB pirates, even though I really have no idea how he could figure taking out Oyaji is to their good, unless he's severely brain-damaged, >_>. Also if he's not being physically manipulated, I can't believe he thinks he's going to come out of this alive. SO. DEAD.
Oh god, please no pirate-ally mutiny! DDD: WHY SO EPIC, ODA!!

It's not working very well for me. Um.
I mean, on the one hand there's all of the foreshadowing and "end of the era" and everybody wanting to kill him and the sword through his chest. And, also his archetype of the wise old powerful wizard mentor. Which. Has a high mortality rate :(
And it makes my storyteller instincts go: this, this would be a really painful, moving time for him to go out in a blaze of glory. And also it would throw all kinds of wrenches in the balance of the world, which could move the story along.
But then I think: Oda. Oda does unexpected subversive things.
Maybe Squard is evil/made a deal but was... reassuring Whitebeard that he'll protect his crew? Because of the debt?
Sengoku seemed pretty desperate to get the Den Den Mushi offline so I somehow think he wasn't in on this...
Oh I have no idea.
Pirate ally mutiny... would be bad but I'm less worried about it. Kind of. At the very least Oars has proven that some of the allies are as committed to bringing Ace home as his own crew. They really can't afford to lose the support of even one ship though @__@
